The Boys Are Back

The Boys Are Back is supposedly based on a true story set in Australia about a father who must raise his two sons after the sudden death of his second wife. Clive Owen plays the British now Australian father who has left a son in Britain with his first wife and has a young son (about 7) with his new wife outside of Adelaide. A lovely setting in a wonderful old-fashioned station farmhouse.

Whip It

First I have to tell all mothers to see this movie with your teenage daughter.  For the mom's pay close attention to Marcia Gay Harden's character "Brooke Cavendar", and think, " Am I smothering my daughter"?  Girls, you need to see this and realize that mom really wants the best for you but sometimes just doesn't get you.  As you watch this think are there better ways to handle our relationship ?  My hat's off to all the mothers and daughters that already have a relationship that is fully functional and healthy.

Obscure Independent Movies

My last entry mentioned my injury and I'm happy to report I'm 99% back to normal but still in intense physical therapy.  Netflix was my friend as were many books, but i think I'm going to start writing a few reviews for the more obscure independent movies that I find appealing.  Many miss the theaters only to be discovered on DVD.  When I find them I'll report them here an in the review section.  If you find one send me that info as well!

Law Abiding Citizen

There is a heinous almost surrealistic break in and home invasion where Clyde Sheldon's wife is raped and she  and his child  murdered in front of Clyde ( Gerard Butler ) , he is stabbed and left for dead.  When the perpetrator's are brought to justice some key evidence is disallowed in court and there is some doubt that the prosecutor who has a 96% track record of convictions , can win the case.  So as to not lose he takes a plea bargain and one man pleads guilty to murder in the 3rd degree and will get out of prison in a few years, while the other will get the death pe

Bright Star

Bright Star is excellent. Those of you who want action will be bored. Those who love period pieces with lots of close-ups, scenery and costumes along with excellent story and acting will love this. This film is about people and relationships, love and devotion. In particular, about the love between young Fanny Brawne and John Keats, the poet, in 1818. Keats died at 25. So both are very young, particularly Fanny. Movie is almost 2 hours long but it does not seem long.

Capitalism, A Love Story

Saw Capitalism - A Love Story with my folks in Alameda on Saturday. We loved it. Especislly my Mom. Many in the audience clapped and cheered at the end. When you go see it, stay through the credits as Moore adds comments and data at the end.

Inglourious Bastards

Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino star in a new WWII film called Inglourious Bastards. For some reason, the critics loved this film. I did not at all. It is set in World War II in occupied France. But it is pure fiction. After all, the heroes and heroine manage to kill Hitler and all of his top brass. I am not giving anything away here as you can see it coming early on.

Surrogates

Surrogates is a science fiction / thriller set in the future where robots or "surrogates" do all the daily tasks in life and take all the risks. Work, play, are all performed by anatomically "perfect" persona's of people.  Like a self made Avatar you never know who is on the client side of a surrogate.  In this world there is basically no crime, or murder, and the world is mostly a large Stepford Village in many respects.

The Informant!

The Informant! is a new movie just out based on the true story of the investigation of the notorious agricultural and chemical conglomerate Archer Daniels Midland (known as ADM) that was fine $500M in the mid 90's for international price fixing. The entire investigation was initiated when a biochemist turned corporate VP told an FBI agent (played by Star Trek first generation hero Scott Bakula with unbelievable hair) about all of the international price fixing he was "forced" into with Japanese, French and other companies by ADM.
