Solitary Man

I saw Solitary Man today starring Michael Douglas. He sure looks his age in this film and given the point of the film, is intended to.

The Secret in Their Eyes

Saw The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos) Sunday with a friend. We both thought it was excellent. This is a slightly over 2 hour film from Argentina (which has been producing excellent films for quite some time, a superb example is The Son of the Bride which you can catch hopefully on Netflix) in Spanish with subtitles. It will be released on DVD within the month. It's the best film I've seen so far this year.

Toy Story 3

I originally went to Reno to see a movie from South America called "Secret in Their Eyes" set in Argentina in 1974. I asked the ticket salesman, who knows me and my taste in movies pretty well, about the R rating. Lots of violence, murder and a rape. That did it for me. Decided to see "Toy Story 3" instead.

Karate Kid ( 2010)

I wasn't sure what to expect with the remake of the Karate Kid.  We know the ultimate ending, but not this particular journey.  Dre Parker played by Jaden Smith ( AKA Daniel Larusso part in the original) is forced to move to China from Detroit when his mother takes a job in the Auto business there.   Almost at once he falls for a young Chinese girl and gets into the trouble we are expecting with some bullies.

Iron Man 2

For pure entertainment and "Buck Rogers" gee whiz gadgets and physics, this sequel to the popular first Iron Man is a hit.  All of the returning characters get enough screen time to fill in some holes in there characters.  Tony Stark has a complication with his electromagnetic device that keeps him alive and is searching for a new method to power himself and Iron Man.  Relationships deepen.

A new Villain emerges with similar brains to Tony played expertly by Micky Rouke.  Russian and Russian accent included!

Letters to Juliet

Vanessa Redgrave at 73 is more of a babe than most women half her age.  Not only is she a graceful and talented veteran actor but has an alluring quality that seems not only to endure but actually has gotten better with age. Here she gets to play a wise grandmother giving out advice to a grandson on love and is the long lost love of Lorenzo played by Franco Nero. .

City Island

City Island is a terrific indie comedy set in City Island, NY. Evidently there is this tiny suburb of NY City that is an island that was once a fishing village. Anyway, film centres around father/husband Vince Rizzo (Andy Garcia) who is a prison guard and dreams of being an actor. He is secretly taking an acting class but telling his wife that he is playing poker with his buddies. She is skeptical. While at acting class, Vince makes friends with a supportive sophisticated woman student.

Babies

Babies - well this was the movie I originally went to Reno to see. It is a documentary with no narration, just about 75 minutes of filming of four babies in their first year of life. The babies were in San Francisco, Tokyo, Mongolia and Africa. I am NOT a baby person but very definitely a cat person.
