Invictus

Clint Eastwood's latest film, Invictus, is very very good. Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandela, South Africa's new President in 1994. The story is about the bottom of the barrel South African rugby team the Spring Boks. The team is revered by white Afrikaners and hated by the black South Africans who see it as a symbol of apartheid. Mandela sees it as a means to unite his country.

Mandela invites the team's young captain for tea in his Presidential office and starts the effort to rebuild the team as a symbol that all South Africans can get behind. He inspires the captain (the son of a recalcitrant Afrikaner) to push the team to the World Cup coming up in 1995. The captain is played, very well, by Matt Damon.

There could be a couple of best actor nominations and maybe even a best picture. See this one.

I also recommend that you rent from Netflix another film about Mandela called The Color of Freedom. This movie follows the relationship between Mandela and his guard during the almost 30 years he spent in prison. Also excellent. It will give you background that will help you understand Nelson Mandela.

By the way, Mandela is one of my heroes (the others are the Dalai Lama and former president Jimmy Carter.)

Solid Movie

asw — Thu, 12/24/2009 - 03:33

Invictus is an interesting story, but not ground breaking. Matt Damon looks as if he has gained about 25 lbs of muscle and looks the part of a rough and tumble rugby player, you can also tell he took some time with a speech coach to work on his accent for the part. A good collaboration with Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood.  Although it is up for some awards I don't think this is Golden Globe or Oscar material.  The exception  might be in the direction by Eastwood. I have seen all Golden Globe Nominees movies this year and don't envy the people having to pick that winner.
