Is Anybody There?

Is Anybody There? is a cute if somewhat slow film wherein Michael Caine plays an old man with creeping senility who moves into a small old folks home in mid-80's Britain. The home is an attempt by a couple with a young son to survive financially in their large old house. The kid is bored and belligerent and hates the old folks and is not happy with parents who are more focused on keeping their business going than they are with raising a young son.

Caine's old man is an ex-magician still carrying a flame for his long gone ex-wife and co-star. He doesn't want to be in the home anymore than the boy wants him or any of the other old folks to be in his home. Initially the cantankerous old man and the boy are at odds but they evolve into friends. The old man becomes a surrogate grandfather for the kid. But the old man is senile and is losing his faculties.

Story is a nice parable of old age and watching the people we care about dying slowly as they lose their minds. A good lesson for the kid. It is slow though and definitely not Caine's best flick but it may be his last; he is really old. It is worth seeing but you may want to rent it on Netflix when it comes out on DVD.
