Battle for Terra
Battle for Terra is an animated science fiction tale of an invading species trying to take over another planet. What is different is that humans are the invading species. We have ruined Earth through over population and war an a small group have escaped to space to look for a new planet and colonize it. Adding o the invaders dilemma and sense of urgency, is the fact that their space ship is just plain getting old and breaking down.
When confronted with an opportunity to colonize a planet there is only one problem, the two intelligent species can't both breath the same air. The earthlings have a system to convert and have re-birth of the planet, a Genesis type machine similar to some of the Star Trek stories.
What is very clever is the choice of the voices for some of the main characters. Especially I liked the weathered, frail, but wise old voice of James Garner for the the Alien Doron, a council leader. Brian Cox as the particularly very militant human commander General Hemmer. Other vetern actors include Justin Long ,Evan Rachel Wood , Chris Evans, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, David Cross.Dennis Quaid, Luke Wilson ,Rosanna Arquette even Mark Hamill and Laraine Newman.
What is particularity relevant is the feeling you get watching this animation, is the thought of " What are we doing to our own planet right now! " Are we not the Alien Species killing off everything around us in order to keep multiplying ? Wholes systems are either in collapse or on the brink, as many species in the ocean have been fished almost to extinction or economic insignificance. We are killing species off that compete with our food like whales and dolphins and sharks. Bird species are losing habitat I could go on Ad Nauseaum.
This move explores that issue and in the battle that ensues the answer to the dilemma comes comes with a brave and novel ending.
Recommended more as a social commentary on current living and practices rather than a space adventure and science fiction
