Flash of Genius
Flash of Genius is very good. It is also based on a true story. It is about Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear), a professor of electrical engineering , who invents the intermittent windshield wiper in the 1960's and his devoted, loving and soon-to-be long suffering wife and kids (eventually six of them). Kearns works with a small automotive supplier to sell the wiper idea to Ford with a plan for a new Kearns Corp to manufacture it. After Ford finally gains his trust and he gives them his research notes and the prototype so that they can file "safety" reports with the US government, Ford steals it and cancels his deal with them. Kearns then spends the next 15 or so years pursuing Ford.
Kearns is dogged in his determination, ending up in a mental hospital for a bit and losing his wife. No one believes that a court case against Ford held in Detroit can win and no one wants to try as all are intimidated by the power and clout of the then big four automakers.
Many small inventors have had their inventions stolen by large corporations (my Dad had one stolen by, I believe, RCA in the 1950's). These garage and small business inventors never have the deep pockets or the decades of time needed to fight banks of corporate lawyers and the mountains of paperwork and delays these lawyers generate. Kearns pursued relentlessly and acted as his own advocate in court, with his son's help, without a lawyer. He won in the end but at quite a cost.
Worth seeing just to watch the little guy take on bit corporate America. Also worth seeing to observe the family dynamic, and how in the end, they came together. Acting is excellent.

Flash of Genius
asw — Thu, 10/16/2008 - 04:29I've seen this also and can recommend it. If for no other reason than to understand fighting for a principal. I wish that everything worked out in the end for the marriage, but that is just not the case. It seems the family was pleased with the outcome, however so many years had taken their toll and ruined consequences on the personal lives of Dr. Robert and Phyliss Kearns. -Al
