My last entry mentioned my injury and I'm happy to report I'm 99% back to normal but still in intense physical therapy. Netflix was my friend as were many books, but i think I'm going to start writing a few reviews for the more obscure independent movies that I find appealing. Many miss the theaters only to be discovered on DVD. When I find them I'll report them here an in the review section. If you find one send me that info as well!
I have been sidelined and in bed for 2 months. I actually was so badly injured that for almost 2 months I couldn't even sit through a movie and am glad that Lin carried on and post what reviews she did. I'll add comments on some of the reviews as well and post a few others as well.
This year I am volunteering time to help with the festival. I have the time am I enjoy the festival, why not give a little back? The Rivers family has been working hard over the years to turn this into a true international festival and the whole island is involved. For more information see

It is an early start to the Summer movie season that is going to offer a plethora of different franchises and sequels including Star Trek and the origins of James T Kirk with all the usual suspects that might bring on a whole new generation of sequels. Angels And Demons, and Terminator Salvation, Night At The Museum 2: Battle Of The Smithsonian, and Pixar’s Up all just in May! With the depression upon us the box office is ringing like it did in the 30's when people flocked to the movies instead of expense vacations. Enjoy this month!
I decided to have a mini Oscar party for 4 last night. I made bruschetta, home made ( Served on baked sliced sourdough with a brushed coating of olive oil before baking on one side). Now I know why it is so expense as an hors d'oeuvres. It is very labor intensive. Small mini pizzas with a home made sauce ( I took whole wheat flat bread almost like a tortilla and spread the sauce and cheese and sprinkled a few pieces of pepperoni and then a light grating of Parmesan when it came out.
It is opening day for Gran Torino. I leave shortly for this much anticipated Resurrection of an older Harry Callaghan type character.
So today I'm feeling rather bloated from over eating and drinking, a common syndrome and habit around the holidays. In a moment of resolve I get on my bicycle to shed a few pounds. Down the highway from Wailea area in Maui to the "Y" where North Kihei Road meets the road to go to Lahaina. I had planned to go to Lahaina a good 55 mile loop and a nice ride on a cool Winter day in Maui...if there really is a cool day! So by now I have logged about 9.85 miles by time I reach the "Y". The uneasy feeling I had in my muscles and stomach is starting
I penned a few thoughts on these movies today. Righteous Kill , The Women, Bangkok Dangerous ,Igor , Lakeview Terrace .
The Women and Lakeview Terrace stand out as better art and explore human emotions in real life situations, but all in all I have been underwhelmed at the box office lately. Sorry Hollywood and Hong Kong you can do better. -AL
Lately I have been on travel, attending family functions and a High School reunion. Had time today to pen some thoughts on several movies:
- Hellboy II: The Golden Army
- Wanted
- Get Smart
- Surfwise
- The Incredible Hulk
- Mamma Mia
- The Dark knight
and made a comment on Angel-a a French Noir film from a posting from Lin Z. Of these I think Dark Knight is exceptional as well as the the documentary Surfwise. -Al
The Maui Film Festival put on a screening of Helen Hunt's movie, Then She Found Me. The review is posted in the website and I invite your comments as well. But more to the point is the social aspect to the movie screening. For the audience there is food available from a local restaurant, today it was from Cafe O Lei a restaurant in Kihei. This was my first opportunity to take part in this although I have been to several Wednesday screenings, I was amazed at the social aspect to their events with a large gathering after the first screen
